Press Release
Rock and Roll in Museum Photo Exhibition
May 28, 2009
Getting a back stage pass is a big deal! It's like getting a glimpse into another world that one can only dream about from glancing at the outside of a magazine cover like Rolling Stone. But Hallmark Museum of Contemporary Photography's new exhibit, "Rock and Roll", the images of Lynn Goldsmith, has the power to transport the viewer to behind-the-scenes moments that capture the musical legends of rockers like David Bowie, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Debbie Harry. Within the blink of an eye, you become an intimate part of the action and documentation of an entire generation of Rock and Roll. These vintage performers, and many others, will be on display in the museum's Gallery 56 location, on the corner of 2nd Street at 56 Avenue A, downtown Turners Falls, Massachusetts, from June 19 through September 21, 2008.
A public Artist's Reception with live music and hors d'oeuvres will be held on
Saturday, September 13 from 1-5 p.m. The museum will be open for additional hours
on this date until 7 p.m.
For over forty years, Lynn Goldsmith has been privileged to witness and photograph the glamorous lives of famous music icons. According to Tom Petty, "Lynn was always the best rock & roll photographer. You felt she was living in the same world you were, and that was worth a lot when you're young and suspicious of authority." Goldsmith's color and black and white prints feature portraits that resonate with the restlessness and personal isolation of an era in which young people found it hard to fit within a preconceived mold. Her images have been published in Rolling Stone, Life, Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated, People, Elle, US, and other magazines. She has published books of her work: Bruce Springsteen, The Police, New Kids, Circus Dreams, PhotoDiary, Springsteen: Access All Areas, and, Flower. Receiving numerous awards for both her still photographs, and her work in video, Goldsmith's images are included in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian, Washington, D.C., and the Museum of Modern Art, New York, New York. She recently exhibited at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Museum.
In addition to photography, Ms. Goldsmith has explored diverse careers within related artistic fields such as film direction and the recording industry. She will be giving a slide lecture about her work, and talking about her life's experiences, following the Artist's Reception on September 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Hallmark Institute of Photography Educational Center, 27 Industrial Boulevard, Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. and seating begins at 7:15 p.m. Ms. Goldsmith will be available to sign copies of her recently released book, "Rock and Roll", throughout the afternoon Reception and following the evening Artist's Talk.
All events are free and open to the public. Regular museum hours are Thursday through Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Further information at info@hmcp.org or 413.863.0009. The museum web site is hmcp.org.
